Inviting Writing

Welcome to my first guest blog! This is a series where I invite other musicians or wedding suppliers to talk about their work. First up is the lovely Vicky who started her business Inviting Writing in September. Safe to say business is booming!
We met in the pub, and had such a relaxed and hilarious chat that Vicky immediately made me want to book her! Vicky’s background is in hotel and event management, including weddings. A newlywed herself, she knows exactly the stresses and strains that can go into planning a wedding and this makes her strive even more to make the lead up as easy as possible for her clients.

A self-confessed “nice handwriter”, Vicky decided to take a calligraphy course in the lead up to her own wedding, she soon found compliments flooding in about her work. Starting a business is often about team work and after a night in the pub with friends, the name “Inviting Writing” and a business was born!
Vicky’s real business boom came in November when she was asked to write a letter from Santa for a friend’s child; 75 letters later and it’s safe to say they were a success! These letters really are beautiful, written with Vicky’s elegant calligraphy pen I’m sure they were a huge hit

Vicky is happy to work with virtually any material and can produce both wedding stationery and signs for the day itself. Her favourite material is mirrors, on which white pens work best.
She prefers to write with her calligraphy pen; this makes thick downstrokes and thinner upstrokes (I learnt a lot in our chat!) and creates a beautiful look. However, some materials are not suitable for the calligraphy pen – it requires a very smooth paper -  she will create what she calls “fake calligraphy”. This is time consuming, as she showed me.

First she will write the words in any pen (she used a gel pen for this example)

Next she creates thicker downstrokes.

Lastly, she colours them in.

Vicky’s attention to detail is fantastic, she scales everything down onto her notepad, practices numerous times until she is happy and finally scales up to the material she is working with. She also fits all of this into a full time job – is she wonder woman?
Vicky is just delightful, and I didn’t want our chat to end. Even though she’s so new to being a wedding supplier, her knowledge of planning and managing events comes in handy at every step. Check out her work and book her!

    Welcome!

Welcome to the blog of Harriet Flather Musician!

I’ve wanted to do this for a while and now feel I have found sufficient inspiration to deliver content that you will find interesting and engaging! I’m hoping to cover a lot of different things here: a description of my week and give you an insight into the life of a freelance musician; some resources for music teaching; information on weddings such as music and why you should have a harpist; and finally I’m going to be bringing in some guests to chat to you about what they do as well!

I hope you enjoy, writing is a fairly new venture for me but it’s good to be back in the proverbial saddle.
