I often feature wedding suppliers on my blog that I have worked with, but this feature is slightly different – Gemma Randall photographed my wedding! Gemma and I met (virtually) during lockdown in a series of networking meetings and I absolutely loved her energy. We always seemed to be making each other laugh and so in the back of my mind I thought she would be perfect to photograph our wedding – if Oli ever proposed! April 2021 – he did get down on one knee and the planning began in earnest! Gemma was one of the first people I enquired with, once we’d got all the details nailed down and on our Zoom call we ended up talking for an hour – but hardly spoke about the wedding! This, for me, meant it was a great match. But once the wedding was over, I wanted to delve deeper into what makes Gemma such an energetic and passionate photographer – so we had another Zoom! Gemma was always one of those teenagers who had a camera with her, she even made all her friends pose on the skate ramp at her local skate park! She studied photography at college, meaning that she explored every area of photography from pinhole and fashion to portraits and landscape photography. Then it was onto University, where she studied Fashion Promotion & Imaging, but specialised in (you guessed it) photography and styling. She wanted to be the next top fashion photographer. In the end though, the fashion industry was not the right fit for Gemma but her calling wasn’t far away. A friend asked her to photograph their wedding and it was “not that bad” an experience according to Gemma. From there, a guest asked her to photograph their wedding and the snowball effect began. Soon, Gemma found a real love for weddings; for the people and the environments, and she just loved the feeling a wedding gives – don’t we all?! Soon her clients were asking for newborn and family photography and Gemma’s diary started to fill up. But she was also still working a corporate job in London which she decided to quit in 2019 and … applied to be an Air Hostess for British Airways. Yep – that shocked me too. But we all have that little voice in our heads that we need to listen to sometimes, and Gemma’s was saying “do your photography”. She listened, and she followed her dream. She soon opened her own Studio for newborn photography and in August 2019 went self employed – “cue great time to be self-employed”. Gemma’s ideal wedding venues are anywhere with amazing natural light (ahem, the Chapel where we got married, she loves venues in the Cotswolds, specifically barn weddings, and also big stately homes like Hengrave Hall. She believes that wedding photos should reflect how the couple see their wedding; if it’s family and friend oriented then Gemma is there! She likes to create emotional pictures that will evoke memories of the day for years to come. Gemma’s couples need to be unapologetically themselves and trust the photography process – cue us completely messing around during our pre-wedding shoot! Working with Gemma on our wedding day was fantastic; because we had met before at our pre-wedding shoot, Oli and I both felt completely comfortable with her and she really melted into the day. I didn’t even realise she was there for most of it! We specifically didn’t want loads of posed images and she completely listened to us and let us just be ourselves – she even captured me being very goofy with my bridesmaids!
Gemma is based in Buckinghamshire but will travel wherever your love takes her – and it’s true! If you book Gemma for your wedding you’ll be gaining a supplier who is 100% invested in your day, and capturing the special memories. Gemma makes you feel special throughout the whole day, and especially afterwards when you receive your gallery, prints and USB! Gemma is a hilarious, gym bunny who loves cooking and is a new horticultural convert, who finds gardening therapeutic. But mostly, she is (and this is in her own words) happiest with brunch and cocktails – “the usual basic bitch stuff”.
