As a professional harpist, I’ve played at countless venues across the country, but few capture my heart quite like Oakham Castle. Nestled in the heart of Rutland, this historic gem offers a wedding experience like no other—steeped in tradition, rich in character, and quite simply, an acoustic dream.

The Great Hall at Oakham Castle has been standing since the 12th century, and it’s extraordinary to think that music has echoed through its walls for over 600 years. When I perform there, I don’t just feel like I’m providing entertainment; I feel like I’m becoming part of a centuries-old story. The stone walls and timbered ceiling create a wonderfully warm, resonant sound—perfect for the harp. There’s a certain magic in knowing the music is carried so beautifully in a space that was built before even the first manuscript of “Greensleeves” was written.

The room itself is stunning. Over 230 horseshoes hang on the walls—some dating back hundreds of years—left by peers of the realm as a symbol of loyalty to the Crown. It’s a unique and rather charming backdrop, ideal for couples looking for something that stands out from the more traditional wedding venues. There's a sense of occasion and grandeur, but without any pretension.

One of the real delights of Oakham Castle is that you have your own private grounds. After the ceremony, guests can spill out into the lawn for drinks and photographs, away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. The Castle Cottage Café, located adjacent to the Castle, can provide a selection of delicious canapés—perfect to accompany a glass of fizz while you celebrate with friends and family.

I’ve always believed that music sets the tone for the day, and at Oakham Castle, it feels truly special to be part of something so timeless. Whether it’s a classical prelude as guests take their seats, a favourite love song during the signing of the register, or a joyful recessional as you walk out hand in hand, the harp finds its home in the heart of this remarkable hall.
