As a professional wedding harpist, I have had the pleasure of playing for many couples during one of the most joyful parts of their wedding day, the drinks reception. After the emotion of the ceremony, this is the time when everyone can relax, mingle and enjoy a glass of fizz before the meal and speeches. Music makes a real difference to the atmosphere, and the harp is a wonderful choice. The harp is an instrument that always captures people’s attention. Its sound is gentle enough to allow guests to talk easily, yet distinctive and elegant in a way that lifts the mood of the whole occasion. Drinks receptions usually last between 90 and 120 minutes, and during this time I provide a continuous flow of music that enhances the celebration without being intrusive. The harp is also versatile, which means I can adapt the repertoire to suit you, whether you prefer classical pieces, jazz standards or modern favourites. Because the harp is large and delicate, it is important to make sure there is enough space and that access is straightforward. A flat surface is essential, and if your drinks reception is outdoors, the harp is perfect for this setting. Indoors, however, it is important to consider the acoustics. Rooms with lots of hard surfaces and more than 100 guests can cause the sound to be lost; but every venue is different so do ask ny advice! One of the most enjoyable parts of planning with couples is creating a playlist that reflects their style. From classical works to romantic ballads and contemporary love songs, the harp suits a wide range of music. I am also very happy to include requests that hold personal meaning, which adds a special touch to the day. The harp lends itself beautifully to different styles, so I usually shape the music to suit the flow of the reception. Light classical or traditional pieces work very well at the beginning as guests collect their drinks and settle into conversation. As the mood becomes livelier, romantic standards such as Can’t Help Falling in Love or Fly Me to the Moon always bring a warm response. A little later, modern favourites can add variety, from artists such as Adele, Ed Sheeran or Coldplay, along with the occasional Disney or film theme if you would like something playful. If you would like to celebrate your heritage, Celtic or folk music is a wonderful addition and sounds especially beautiful on the harp. To close, I often choose something uplifting that leaves everyone smiling as they are called to dinner. The drinks reception is one of the most relaxed and sociable parts of the day, and it is the perfect time to weave in music that feels personal to you. That might be a harp version of the song you walked down the aisle to, or a piece that reminds you of a special moment in your relationship. These choices create memories that you and your guests will carry with you. The drinks reception is all about connection, joy and celebration. Live harp music provides an elegant backdrop, enhancing the occasion without ever taking over. If you want your guests to feel comfortable, entertained and surrounded by something truly special, harp music is a beautiful way to bring your drinks reception to life.
