Ceremony Music

Deciding on the music for your wedding ceremony can be very tricky. There always seems to be an infinite amount of music to choose from and you want it all! Or, you have no idea at all what you would like!

I am here to help.

Firstly, when do you need music in the ceremony?
Most musicians, including myself, will offer music for while your guests arrive, entrance of the bride, signing of the register and leaving. These all require something different.

The entrance of the bride is a really special moment (will she be late?!) and I have had all sorts of requests for this, but the one that wins out is Canon in D by Pachabel. This is a beautiful piece that really suits an entrance as it can be ended at virtually any time, meaning you can walk down the aisle at your pace!
Other favourites are Wagner’s Bridal March from Lohengrin and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March. These are both very triumphant and exciting and would suit a stately home or church wedding perfectly.

For the signing of the register, I would suggest two songs that you really love and one that you’re perhaps not so in love with as there’s normally only time for two songs. This is the time for your own taste to really shine through, it’s your day!
Again, requests for all sorts here but the ones that have worked best are:
Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud; Perfect
Adele – Make You Feel My Love
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
She from Notting Hill
All of Me – John Legend
My Heart Will Go On
Can’t Help Falling in Love
City of Stars from La La Land
Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars

Any film music works well here or a classical piece can slot in well too, I like to play ‘Clair de Lune’ or ‘Morning’ from Peer Gynt Suite. But the choice really is yours!

For your exit as a married couple, something with a recognisable opening is always a winner. Everyone applauds and then they hear something they know! Again, your choice completely here! Lots of requests that work here are:
Congratulations
Make you Feel My Love
She
White Christmas – at certain times of the year!!!
City of Stars from La La Land
The Beatles –  Here Comes The Sun; Love Me Do; All You Need is Love
Arrival of the Queen of Sheba

I do hope that’s helped, this is only a small selection of pieces that work brilliantly!

As always, get in touch if you’re struggling with choices or need a bit of guidance. One caviat I’ll pop on any choices is that they must be playable on the harp – some things just aren’t! But I can help guide with that.

Whatever you choose, make sure it’s personal to you two as a couple – it’s your day after all!

    Welcome!

Welcome to the blog of Harriet Flather Musician!

I’ve wanted to do this for a while and now feel I have found sufficient inspiration to deliver content that you will find interesting and engaging! I’m hoping to cover a lot of different things here: a description of my week and give you an insight into the life of a freelance musician; some resources for music teaching; information on weddings such as music and why you should have a harpist; and finally I’m going to be bringing in some guests to chat to you about what they do as well!

I hope you enjoy, writing is a fairly new venture for me but it’s good to be back in the proverbial saddle.
