Planning a winter wedding is a magical experience--there’s something truly special about saying “I do” surrounded by frosty landscapes, twinkling fairy lights, and the warmth of loved ones. But when it comes to choosing live music for your day, there are a few extra things to consider to ensure everything runs smoothly. As a professional harpist, I’ve played at many winter weddings, so here are my top five tips for planning your wedding music during the colder months. Consider Space for a Live Musician Your wedding venue may have ample space for guests, but have you thought about where your live musician will be positioned? If you’re planning both your ceremony and drinks reception indoors, ensure there’s enough room for a harpist (or any other musician) to set up comfortably. A harp, for example, takes up more space than you might expect, and I also need a sturdy chair and a bit of breathing room to play properly. Checking this in advance with your venue can prevent any last-minute stress on the day. Will You Include Christmas Music? A winter wedding naturally lends itself to the magic of Christmas music, but the choice is entirely yours. Do you want to embrace the festive spirit with traditional carols like Silent Night or O Holy Night, or would you prefer contemporary seasonal classics like All I Want for Christmas Is You? Whether you opt for subtle festive touches or a full-blown Christmas playlist, let your musician know in advance so they can prepare the perfect arrangements to suit your style. Maintain a Consistent Room Temperature Live instruments, especially stringed ones like the harp, are incredibly sensitive to temperature changes. A room that fluctuates from very hot to very cold can affect tuning and even cause damage. Likewise, playing in the cold isn’t easy—freezing fingers don’t make for a great performance! If possible, keep your ceremony and reception rooms at a steady, comfortable temperature. If you’re moving between indoor and outdoor spaces, consider a plan to keep musicians warm and their instruments safe. Ensure Easy Access for Your Harpist Harpists are used to moving our instruments around, but a little consideration for access can make a big difference. If your chosen space is on the first floor, check whether there’s a lift. If there are lots of stairs, narrow doorways, or long distances between rooms, it’s worth discussing this in advance so that your musician can plan accordingly. The last thing you want is a delay in music because of unexpected logistical challenges! Think About the Atmosphere You Want to Create Music has the power to set the tone for your day, so think about the atmosphere you want. A winter wedding can feel warm and cosy with soft, romantic harp melodies or magical and festive with joyful Christmas tunes. Consider the key moments—walking down the aisle, signing the register, and your first moments as a married couple. Whether you want a traditional, elegant feel or something more contemporary and fun, choosing the right music will enhance your day beautifully.
